We currently practice under a self-pay model. While using insurance is beneficial in lowering your out-of-pocket costs, there are some potential drawbacks to the use of insurance that we believe you should be aware of when accessing your mental health benefits.
If you decide that, given this information, you would still like to take advantage of your insurance plan's mental health benefits, I will be more than happy to provide the information needed for a company to reimburse you for an out-of-network provider.
- Insurance companies require all clients to be given a diagnosis to classify them. While this is appropriate when people are clearly dealing with a clinical disorder, there are many clients who need help coping with current life stresses. Even if you are dealing with a break-up, trying to improve the relationship between you and your child, or dealing with a loss, insurance companies will require a diagnosis be provided, decide if that is a reimbursable diagnosis, and will often direct the focus and course of treatment.
- Insurance company may dictate session frequency and length; often only approving a few sessions before they require more information about your progress toward your goals. A self-pay model also allows for the flexibility needed should you require a longer session or more sessions without pre-approval from the insurance company.
- When accessing your insurance benefit, parts of your mental health records are required to be released to the insurance to allow for reimbursement or to access more sessions. That means that parts of your mental health record become part of your medical record and may be accessible through your insurance company. A self-pay model helps you keep control of you mental health record; ensuring your private health information is not shared except with your express written consent (Record Release Form) or in situations required by law (i.e., your safety or the safety of others).
